Lawyers expect release of Sudan former intelligence chief at hearing today
June 15, 2013 (KHARTOUM) – The former head of Sudan’s National Intelligence Security Services (NISS) Salah Gosh could be released from jail as soon as today, his lawyers said.
Gosh is to stand before a judge today who will examine evidence the prosecution will produce to justify holding the ex-spy chief.
Nabil Adeeb, Gosh’s lawyer, said that the court granted continuation until today for the prosecution to compile evidence and present it.
Gosh was arrested last year in connection with a failed coup attempt involving dozens of army and security officers.
However, the government has yet to present evidence implicating him in the plot and sources say that Khartoum is wary about setting free a man who is in possession of so much secrets about the regime.
Gosh was excluded from three pardons issued by president Omer Hassan al-Bashir to those convicted in the coup attempt.
His lawyer said that the after several delays caused by the prosecution, today is the last day for evidence to be revealed or else the judge will have to order Gosh’s release.
