The speaker, John Marik Makur is accused of alleged involvement in corruption and mismanagement of parliamentary affairs in the state.

Shadrach Bol Machok, a lawmaker representing Wulu county told Sudan Tribune that Makur only has 14 days to comply with MPs’ demands or be forced out of office.

“If the speaker has not resigned by the time their [MPs] strike ends in 14 days time, we will table a move for him to be forced out from office”, he said.

The speaker is also accused of allegedly frustrating a move by lawmakers to summon the state governor, Matur Choul Dhoul after he swore-in his new cabinet members without parliamentary approval.

Dhuol’s unconstitutional decision, according to several lawmakers, was supported by the speaker, who is also accused of being the governor’s ally.

At least 36 out of the 49 MPs have signed a document against the speaker’s decision. The assembly, by law, only requires a third of lawmakers voted to have the speaker impeached.
