Unity state students union elects new leaders
July 13, 2014 (KAMPALA) – South Sudan’s Unity state students’ union in Uganda elected new office bearers on Saturday at an occasion witnessed by over 100 students.
Speaking at the event held at Kampala International University, the former students’ union leader, Malek Bol, advised the new leaders to work for peace and progress in the state.
“If we do not have a unity within us, we cannot be able to unite other communities from the country. We have to work hard in order for charity to begin in our home for better South Sudan,” said Bol.
The newly elected union leader, Charles Tot, vowed to foster unity, among the entire students body, citing what he described as selective scholarships that often exclude students from Unity state.
“As from today you have elected me as the chairman of this students association, I will be working in support of federalism in the country. Federalism is the only way for us the students from all South Sudan and particularly in Unity state to have opportunity of any scholarships,” said Tot.
His main priority, he said, would be to mobilise resources for funding of the union’s activities, vowing to fight anyone intending to destroy the student body.
“Those are individual interest; it has no connection with our union, and if there are group of people doing that, they do it for their individual interest, but not for union. We cannot prevent them of doing their business of surviving,” said Tot.
Buay Keake, formerly the speaker of South Sudan’s youth assembly, urged the new leadership to work for unity.
“Leadership is about focusing on unity. Today you have been tasked by these students to lead them. It is the right time to unite and avoid those individual opportunistic group that collaborating with evils who have failed to reflex the death of their people,” he said.
Peter Nin Tut, the president of South Sudan students’ union described the polls as free and fair, advising the new office bearers to focus on uniting the people of South Sudan.
