Jonglei’s Duk county to receive food aid this week

July 14, 2014 (MABIOR) – Aid agencies are due to begin air drops of food items in Jonglei state’s Duk county this week, officials said.

“Food will be dropped by air in Duk, that will be the only accessible point for distribution. We need security there,” an aid worker told the county commissioner on Monday.

A meeting with aid agencies was organised by the commissioner to review plans in place for delivery of food to over 42,000 displaced people in his county due to conflict.

Several lawmakers from the area were also involved in the push for this humanitarian intervention.

Meanwhile, about 2,205 civilians have reportedly been forced to move from Ayod county to Duk Padiet owing to the unbearable humanitarian conditions in their community.

“There are more 520 households from Ayod who came to Duk. They are 2,205 individuals. They came from Gol, Wibol and other places in Ayod. I have talked to the MPs to push the army to provide security at those places where they stay, because we don’t know what will come next,” the Duk county commissioner told Sudan Tribune.

The World Food Programme (WFP) will air drop the food in Duk, with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) tasked with its distribution.
