Russian foreign minister to visit Sudan

November 22, 2014 (KHARTOUM) – The Russian foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, will pay an official visit to Sudan on 3 December to promote bilateral ties and participate in the meetings of the Arab-Russian cooperation forum in Khartoum.

The official spokesperson of Sudan’s foreign ministry, Youssef al-Kordofani, said in press statements on Saturday that Sudan’s foreign minister, Ali Karti, will hold talks with his Russian counterpart on bilateral relations.

“The two sides will discuss economic and cultural issues and coordination between the two countries in international forums, besides issues of mutual concern,” he said.

He described the visit as important and a qualitative shift in relations between the two countries, saying it is a culmination of several visits undertaken by Karti to Russia.

Al-Kordofani pointed out that relations between the two countries will witness a new phase of cooperation and coordination after the upcoming visit, adding that Sudan seeks to establish economic partnership with Russia.

According to the spokesperson, the ministerial meeting between the two countries will be preceded by a preparatory meeting chaired by the state ministers of the foreign ministries in the two countries.

The second secession of the Arab-Russian cooperation Forum is due to held in Khartoum during 2 to 4 December, with the participation of the foreign ministers of Arab countries, Russia and the secretary-general of the Arab League (AL).

Al-Kordofani said the forum will include a ministerial meeting, which will be addressed by foreign ministers of participating countries and the AL secretary-general, as well as meetings to enhance economic cooperation between Arab nations and Russia.

He said the meetings will also discuss issues of common concern between Russia and Arab countries, as well as coordination in regional and international forums.
