Sweden donates $6.4 million for humanitarian needs in Sudan
April 21, 2015 (KHARTOUM) – The government of Sweden has contributed $6.4 million to the Sudan Common Humanitarian Fund (CHF) to help address growing humanitarian needs in Sudan.
The office of the United Nations resident and humanitarian coordinator in Sudan said in a statement extended to Sudan Tribune on Tuesday that the Swedish contribution comes at a critical time, when funding for humanitarian action in Sudan is scarce and humanitarian needs are growing.
The statement pointed out that Sweden has been a committed supporter of the CHF, contributing some $106 million since 2006.
Swedish ambassador to Sudan Mette Sunnergren said that her country follows the humanitarian situation in Sudan with concern, underscoring that Sudan remains a priority recipient of Swedish humanitarian support in 2015.
“CHF allows humanitarian actors to rapidly respond to urgent humanitarian needs and it also serves as a key source of funding to the Humanitarian Response Plan, an important tool that identifies protracted humanitarian needs and priorities in Sudan,” she added
El-Mostafa Benlamlih, the acting humanitarian coordinator for Sudan, said that the timely funding to the Sudan CHF by donors such as Sweden helps humanitarian partners to sustain urgent interventions to people in need across Sudan.
“The CHF helps to ensure that the highest needs of affected people are identified and addressed in a transparent, timely and cost-effective manner by national and international responders,” he added.
The Sudan CHF is a multi-donor pooled fund that supports the timely allocation and disbursement of funds to Sudan’s most critical humanitarian needs. To date, it has received and granted over one billion dollars to aid organizations in Sudan.
Last year, the fund received support from Denmark, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom (UK) and allocated more than $55 million for humanitarian action across Sudan.
