18 midwives graduate from Western Bahr el Ghazal state
July 29, 2015 (WAU)-18 students on the midwifery training program graduated from the Health Science Institute in South Sudan’ Western Bahr el Ghazal state on Wednesday.
The students who comprised of 10 males and 8 females were awarded certificates in midwifery upon successfully completing the three year intensive training program.
Speaking at the occassion held in the state capital, Wau, the Western Bahr el Ghazal health minister, Isaac Clerto said the midwives will positively impact on communities.
“We are very happy that we with our support partners have reached our destination today, we have achieved our main goal objective as we are witnessing the graduation of our students who will be very useful into our communities,” stressed the minister.
Clerto assured the 18 midwives of ready employment within the state health ministry.
James Ukello, who currently works at Wau Teaching hospital said the new graduates would support the state health ministry in serving communities throughout the region.
“It is history that our health department in Western Bahr el Ghazal State has got a good number of midwives including males. People should not ask why males are involved in midwives, this is a profession and a technical field,” he remarked.
Voila James, one of the graduates said, “Today, am very happy for my graduation, now am going to the community to serve the mothers and reduce the mortality rates.”
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) funded the three-year midwifery program. It was facilitated by both the state and national health ministries.
