May 24, 2021 (KHARTOUM) – The Qatari Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Monday discussed in Khartoum ways to enhance bilateral cooperation and proposed to establish an investment zone in Sudan.

Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani on Monday met with the Chairman of the Sovereign Council, Abd Al-Fattah al-Burhan, his deputy, Mohammad Hamdan Dagalo “Hemetti”, Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok and Foreign Minister Mariam al-Mahdi.

Al-Thani delivered a message from the Emir of Qatar to al-Burhan dealing with strengthening bilateral relations. Also, he conveyed to the Prime Minister the support of his country to face the economic situations and to achieve peace and stability in Sudan.

The Sudanese cabinet stated that the meeting between Hamdok and Al-Thani “discussed a Qatari proposal to establish an economic investment zone (in Sudan),” adding that the Prime Minister welcomed the proposal and linked it to developing the country’s infrastructure.

The visiting minister extended him an invitation to visit Qatar for more discussions between the two said.

During the Paris Conference for investment in Suan, the Sudanese government presented solar and wind energy in addition to gas projects saying they are crucial for development in the country.

During a joint press conference with his Sudanese counterpart, the Qatari foreign minister said that the visit provided a good opportunity to discuss how to advance joint cooperation between the two countries and to strengthen “fraternal relations that are based on solid historical foundations”.

He added that he discussed with Sudanese officials in Sudan regional issues, whether the recent tension with Ethiopia or the regional situation in Libya and Chad.

“We do not want anything that affects the Sudanese people, their security, or their lives. We also commend the way Sudan deals with these issues in a wise and quiet diplomatic manner,” he said

“We hope that there will be a solution to these crises through dialogue and diplomatic communication between the two countries,” he added referring to the border crisis with Ethiopia.

The Qatari Deputy Prime Minister said he discussed peace in Darfur and the Juba Peace Agreement and affirmed his country’s support for the ongoing efforts to achieve peace in Sudan.

Al-Thani is the highest-ranking Qatari official to visit Sudan for the first time after the collapse of the former regime.

His visit to Sudan came after a visit to Libya and he left Khartoum heading to Cairo.

Earlier this year, al-Burhan and Hemetti visited Doha and met with the Emir of Qatar Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani.
