Arab League welcomes deals between Sudan govt, Darfur rebels

OMDURMAN, Nov 10, 2004 (Sudanese Radio) — Arab League Secretary-General Amr Musa has welcomed the signing of the two protocols on security and humanitarian issues between the Sudanese government and the two rebel groups — the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) — in Darfur, western Sudan.

Amr_musa.jpgAn official spokesman for the secretary-general, Husam Zaki, stressed that Mussa [photo] regarded the signing an important step towards settling the crisis in Darfur, and hoped that it would be reflected on the ground during its implementation to improve the security and humanitarian conditions in Darfur.

The spokesman said that the secretary-general had received a full report on developments in the peace process and a copy of the agreement from the Arab League representative at the peace talks being held in the Nigerian capital of Abuja.
