Kenya blocks Sudanese refugees

By John Augustine Emojong

MALABA, Kenya, Nov 16, 2004 (The Monitor) — Kenyan immigration officials at Malaba border post recently blocked the entry of over 20 Sudanese refugees who were heading to a refugee camp in the western part of the country.

The refugees, mainly women and children told The Monitor that they had come from various parts of northern Uganda where they had camped for sometime following continued clashes between the Sudanese government and the various rebel groups in the south and south-western troubled Darfur region.

The Kenyan government reportedly sent back most of them and did not allow entry of any more Sudanese refugees, especially those not cleared by their embassy.
“We shall stay here because we do not have anywhere to go,” an old woman told The Monitor.
