British artists raise $350,000 for Sudan’s Darfur region

NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 14, 2004 (PANA) — A recent concert in London whose proceeds will be used in the support of the victims of the Darfur conflict in Sudan raised US$350,000, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has said.

“Refugee Voices: A Concert for Darfur” was held in London’s Royal Albert Hall on 8 December to raise the funds to assist the western Sudan’s troubled region.

It featured a diverse mix of British artists including Pretenders singer Chrissie Hynde, soprano and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Barbara Hendricks, Simply Red front man Mick Hucknall, Greek opera star Mario Frangoulis, bass-baritone Sir Willard White and the Brand New Heavies.

Others were singers Alison Moyet, Andrew Coleman, Robbie Craig, disco-diva Jocelyn Brown, Antony Costa from Blue, Roisin Murphy from Moloko, musical stage actress Ruthie Henshall and pop star Daniel Pearce.
