US hail choice of Sudan’s VP to conduct peace talks with Darfur rebels

WASHINGTON, Jan 15, 2005 (SMC) — US state department official responsible for Darfur Charles Snyder told reporters in Washington yesterday that the appointment of first vice president Ali Osman Mohamed Taha for handling dispute in Darfur was good step on the right way.

Charles_Snyder3.jpgCharles thinks that the resolution of Darfur, dispute lies with historical peace agreement model, signed by the government and SPLAS on 9th of January in Nairobi Kenya. He adds that the said agreement has distributed wealth and power sharing based on federal system, Thus he said, “A federal system based on power and wealth sharing is the shortest road for resolving Darfur disputer” .

Charles when asked whether he believes, the Naivash agreement could be 100 percent applicable in Darfur, he stated that ” It is of course no, due to the fact that each area has it’s different environment”. “But I do believe Naivasha protocols could be a resolution for Darfur by 90%”.

Charles however stated that. “Colin Powell US secretary of state and John Danforth presidential envoy for peace in Sudan had put pressures on the two sides (Government and SPLA) until they signed the final deal” .

“Likewise pressure would continue until a resolution for Darfur had to be maintained” says Charles.
