January 17, 2025 (ATBARA) – Army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan delivered a fiery speech in Atbara Friday, vowing to crush the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and punish those who “insult the Sudanese people.” His defiant remarks come a day after the United States imposed sanctions on him.

Addressing a large crowd, Burhan declared, “We will silence anyone who insults the Sudanese people.” He reiterated his commitment to winning the war against the RSF, which he labelled a “terrorist militia.”

Burhan arrived in Atbara accompanied by Lieutenant General Mirghani Idris, Director General of the Defense Industries System. He praised the Sudanese people for their resilience and support of the armed forces, framing the conflict as a fight for the nation’s dignity.

“This is the Sudanese people’s battle,” Burhan declared, “and we are fighting on their behalf.” He dismissed the impact of international sanctions and vowed to overcome all challenges.

On Thursday, the U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Burhan and a civilian arms supplier to the Sudanese Armed Forces. This follows similar sanctions imposed on RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo “Hemetti” a week prior, after the US State Department accused the RSF of genocide.
