Security Council warns Sudan parallel authority threatens further conflict
March 6, 2025 (UNITED NATIONS) – The United Nations Security Council on yesterday Tuesday expressed “grave concern” over the signing of a charter to establish a parallel governing authority in Sudan, warning it risked deepening the country’s conflict and fragmenting the nation.
In a press statement, the council members stressed that such unilateral actions would worsen the already dire humanitarian situation in Sudan.
“The members of the Security Council underscored that such actions risk exacerbating the ongoing conflict in Sudan, fragmenting the country, and worsening an already dire humanitarian situation,” the statement said.
The council reaffirmed its commitment to Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity and warned that any steps undermining these principles threatened regional stability.
The statement called on warring parties to immediately cease hostilities and engage in political dialogue towards a durable ceasefire, welcoming calls from the African Union and U.N. Secretary-General for a Ramadan ceasefire.
The council reiterated the need for all parties to adhere to the Jeddah Declaration and participate in a “genuine, inclusive, and transparent national dialogue” that would lead to a civilian-led transition and democratically elected government.
“The members of the Security Council reiterated a call for all parties to comply with their commitments outlined in the Jeddah Declaration,” the statement said.
The council urged member states to refrain from external interference that could escalate the conflict and to uphold international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, including resolutions 2750 (2024) and 2736 (2024).
The council also called for adherence to International Humanitarian Law.
The statement expressed full support for the efforts of U.N. Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Ramtane Lamamra, to facilitate dialogue and find a sustainable solution to the conflict.
The conflict in Sudan, which erupted in April 2023, has displaced millions and created a severe humanitarian crisis.
