UN warns of catastrophic health crisis in Sudan’s Darfur, nationwide
March 11, 2025 (UNITED NATIONS) – North Darfur’s capital, El Fasher, and surrounding displacement camps face an “extremely dire” health situation, with more than 200 health facilities non-functional and severe shortages of medical supplies and staff, the United Nations said on Tuesday.
Spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters at a briefing that ongoing hostilities have overwhelmed Sudan’s already fragile healthcare system.
“Our humanitarian partners in North Darfur are reporting an extremely dire health situation, particularly in the state capital of El Fasher and displacement camps in surrounding areas,” Dujarric said.
Waves of displacement, caused by the conflict, hinder the system’s ability to meet basic needs, he said. Insecurity and access constraints further impede the delivery of essential medical supplies.
The crisis extends beyond El Fasher, with the World Health Organization (WHO) reporting that more than 70% of hospitals and health facilities across conflict-affected areas in Sudan are no longer operational.
“The picture is bleak, but sadly, not only in El Fasher,” Dujarric said, citing disease outbreaks in White Nile State.
He condemned “relentless attacks” on Sudan’s health system, citing WHO data of nearly 150 attacks on healthcare centres since the war began, with the actual number likely higher.
“We appeal – yet again – for the parties to the conflict to ensure safe, sustained and timely humanitarian access to reach people in need of critical support,” Dujarric said. “Civilians must be protected, and their essential needs met.”
