South Sudan participates in London peace conference on Sudan
April 16, 2025 (JUBA) – South Sudan participated in a recent peace conference on Sudan held in London, reiterating its commitment to supporting a peaceful settlement of the conflict through dialogue, its foreign minister said.
Foreign Minister Monday Semaya Kumba told Sudan Tribune that South Sudan’s involvement showed President Salva Kiir Mayardit and his administration’s strong commitment to “a peaceful and stable Sudan.”
“On the directive and guidance of his excellency, President Salva Kiir Mayardit, I travelled to attend the conference in London,” Kumba stated. “The conference was to solicit views for a unified international and regional approach regarding the situation in Sudan and how it could be resolved.”
“Views were shared and consensus was reached that the only way to resolve the conflict in Sudan is through peaceful dialogue,” Kumba added.
The foreign minister described the conference as an initiative by key international actors to align strategies for peacefully handling the Sudan conflict.
He noted that attendees included South Sudan, the African Union, the European Union, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and countries bordering Sudan, highlighting the focus on strategic coordination.
“The most important thing is that these efforts will be coordinated through the existing mechanisms,” Kumba explained. He noted that since the conflict began, countries and organizations like the United Nations, the European Union, the African Union, regional body IGAD (Intergovernmental Authority on Development), and friends of Sudan “started talking with one voice,” advocating for peaceful dialogue.
“This position was reiterated, and [attendees] agreed to closely coordinate efforts to forge a unified position,” Kumba said.
He also stated that the conference unanimously agreed to support Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. “If you want to support a brother, you don’t tear him down to pieces. Unity of Sudan and preservation of its territorial integrity was emphasized,” he concluded.
