Sudan’s Burhan receives invitation to visit Egypt from Sisi
April 16, 2025 (PORT SUDAN) – The head of Sudan’s Sovereign Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, received a written message on Wednesday from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi containing an official invitation to visit Egypt.
The invitation came hours after apparent disagreements emerged between Egypt and Saudi Arabia on one side, and the UAE on the other, during an international conference on Sudan held in London on Tuesday. The conference reportedly failed to agree on establishing a contact group to stop the war in Sudan.
The exact nature of the disagreements was not specified. Still, Saudi and Egyptian officials insisted in their remarks on the importance of Sudan’s official institutions. In contrast, the Emirati official reportedly reiterated that neither the army nor the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) represent the Sudanese people.
According to a statement released in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia’s deputy foreign minister again rejected the formation of a parallel government that the RSF reportedly intends to announce soon. Meanwhile, Egypt also expresses explicit support for the military-led government in Sudan.
This was the first time the two countries took such a public stance against the UAE’s alleged support for the paramilitary group. Egyptian and Saudi officials spoke about the conflict’s negative impact on regional stability.
Al-Burhan met with Egyptian Ambassador to Sudan Hani Salah in Port Sudan, in the presence of Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Youssif.
The Egyptian ambassador said in a press statement that al-Burhan welcomed the invitation, adding that the Sudanese and Egyptian sides would work on arranging the visit.
“The meeting addressed developments in Sudan, including the situation in Darfur and the London conference on Sudan held on Tuesday,” the ambassador added.
He said he briefed the head of the Sovereign Council on bilateral relations and ongoing arrangements for holding the second Sudanese-Egyptian Business Forum.
The Egyptian ambassador said his country supports Sudan based on the close ties binding the two peoples.
He added, “We want to turn the crisis Sudan is experiencing, which the world describes as forgotten, into an unforgettable one,” praising the sacrifices and resilience of the Sudanese people, and their solidarity in rebuilding what the war has destroyed.
