Saudi Arabia vows to pursue Sudan peace efforts via Jeddah talks

May 14, 2025 (RIYADH) – Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said on Wednesday the kingdom would continue efforts through the Jeddah platform to end the conflict in Sudan.

Speaking at the opening of a Gulf-U.S. summit in Riyadh, attended by U.S. President Donald Trump, the crown prince affirmed his support for resolving regional conflicts peacefully.

He stated that Saudi Arabia “continues its efforts to end the crisis in Sudan through the Jeddah platform, which Riyadh and Washington sponsor.” These efforts would aim for a comprehensive ceasefire, he added.

The U.S.-Saudi mediated talks in Jeddah were suspended on Dec. 3, 2023, after the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) failed to implement confidence-building measures. These included the withdrawal of the RSF from major cities and civilian facilities.

The Jeddah platform had earlier led to the signing of a declaration of principles by the warring factions on May 11, 2023, covering rules of engagement, civilian protection, infrastructure, and aid delivery.

Since the talks were suspended, the Sudanese army has regained control over most of Khartoum state, though the RSF still holds some positions in Omdurman and other areas, according to military sources. The conflict has also drawn in multiple other armed groups aligned with either side.

The RSF has reportedly formed a new alliance with other armed factions, as well as civilian and political groups, with plans to establish a parallel governing body. Concerns are mounting that Sudan could become a proxy battleground for regional powers allegedly supporting different sides in the conflict.
