Sudanese activist “Tupac” detained at embassy in Libya
May 19, 2025 (TRIPOLI, Libya) – Mohamed Adam “Tupac”, a Sudanese activist accused of complicity in the killing of a police brigadier general, has been detained at the Sudanese embassy in Libya, according to multiple sources.
Tupac, who escaped from prison amid a security vacuum after conflict erupted in Sudan, had previously expressed willingness to face trial once stability returned. He was on trial with other protesters for the assassination of Brigadier General Ali Breima during protests near the Presidential Palace on Jan. 13, 2021.
Sources told Sudan Tribune that “members of the Sudanese Embassy staff in Tripoli arrested Tupac without clarifying the reasons for the arrest.”
The Sudanese Human Rights Monitor confirmed Tupac’s detention by embassy staff in Tripoli, condemning the act as a “flagrant violation of international norms and an unacceptable overreach.”
The Monitor stated that the arrest contradicts the role of embassies, which are meant to protect citizens abroad, not threaten their freedom. It called for Tupac’s immediate release and urged the UNHCR to intervene to ensure his safety.
Samia Hassan Hamid, head of Sudanese Women in the Council of Communities Coordination in Tripoli, confirmed Tupac’s arrest to Sudan Tribune. She stated that the activist was detained at the request of the Sudanese government, as he is an accused in a murder case and had escaped from prison during the war.
Al-Sadiq Ali Hassan, Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Darfur Lawyers’ Association, told Sudan Tribune that the embassy’s pursuit of Tupac indicates a lack of coordination within Sudan’s state apparatuses.
“If the matter concerns the criminal report filed against Tupac for the killing of the police brigadier general, law enforcement agencies had previously justified the suspension of criminal proceedings,” he said. He added that exceptional circumstances due to the war led to the release of prisoners and the suspension of law enforcement.
The Sudanese Embassy has not commented on the reasons for the arrest or Tupac’s fate.
