Sudan vows to coordinate with South Sudan on mutual interests

 May 20, 2025 (JUBA) – Sudan has reiterated its commitment to coordinated efforts with South Sudan to alleviate the suffering of citizens and enhance relations on issues of mutual benefit, citing interdependency and shared interests.

The statements were made by a Sudanese diplomat at a meeting with South Sudan’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Akuei Bona Malwal Madut, who was recently appointed to his current position by presidential order.

“During the discussion, the Sudanese diplomat used the opportunity to congratulate the deputy minister of foreign affairs and international cooperation on his recent appointment, describing him as the right person during a time requiring someone with the right skills, attitude, knowledge and readiness to consolidate and enhance the efforts of President Salva Kiir with other countries in the region to achieve peace and stability,” a statement after the meeting said.

Maburak Mahjoub Musa, the Sudanese deputy head of mission and charge d’affaires in South Sudan, said he paid a courtesy call to the deputy minister to reaffirm Sudan’s commitment to strengthening cooperation in areas of mutual benefit and interest, especially promoting the welfare of citizens in both countries.

“We are all going through difficult times, whether in Sudan and South Sudan, and this requires close coordination and working together to address issues of mutual interest,” Musa said.

While Sudan and South Sudan have a history of both cooperation and conflict over unresolved post-secession issues, including border demarcations and claims over territorial ownership, the current conflict in Sudan has seen Sudanese officials accuse elements in the South Sudan government of collaborating with the leadership of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which is fighting the Sudanese army. The current efforts point towards a renewed emphasis on shared interests and the need for mutually beneficial agreements.
