Security Council condemns attack in North Darfur, urges to left El Fasher siege

June 13, 2025 (UNITED NATIONS) – The United Nations Security Council on Thursday strongly condemned a deadly attack on a humanitarian convoy in Sudan’s North Darfur and reiterated its demand for the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to end its siege of El Fasher to allow for the safe delivery of aid.

In a press statement, the 15-member council condemned the June 2 attack near Al Koma, which struck a joint World Food Programme (WFP) and UNICEF convoy, killing five humanitarian workers. Several trucks carrying life-saving supplies were burned in the assault.

“Security Council members reiterated the Secretary-General’s call for an urgent investigation and for the perpetrators to be held to account,” the statement, issued by Council President Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett of Guyana, read.

The council also voiced deep concern over the escalating violence and the deteriorating humanitarian situation in and around El Fasher, the last major city in the Darfur region not controlled by the RSF.

It referenced its resolution passed earlier this month that demands the RSF halt its siege and calls for an immediate end to the fighting to allow for the safe delivery of food and prevent a large-scale famine. The statement also condemned the repeated shelling by the RSF on May 29 that damaged a WFP food storage facility in El Fasher, further crippling aid operations.

Council members reminded all parties in the conflict of their obligation under international law to protect aid workers, noting that deliberate attacks may constitute war crimes, and called on them to abide by their commitments under the Jeddah Declaration to protect civilians.
