June 16, 2025 (PORT SUDAN) – Sudan’s annual inflation rate eased to 142.82% in May, the Central Bureau of Statistics said on Monday, as a slight slowdown in the national price index was overshadowed by a massive spike in conflict-ridden North Darfur.

While the year-on-year figure remains exceptionally high, the statistics office noted that the monthly inflation rate had declined compared to April. Urban inflation fell slightly to 146.30% from 147.52% the previous month, while rural inflation saw a more significant drop to 141.84% from 163.73%.

The data highlighted severe regional differences in the country, where a protracted conflict has crippled the economy and displaced millions.

In North Darfur, monthly inflation surged by 78.68%, a direct result of rising food and service costs in the city of El Fasher, which has been under siege by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2024, the agency said.

The national inflation rate was calculated from a basket of goods and services, with price increases seen in housing and communications. These were offset by price drops in eight other sectors, including the heavily weighted food and beverages category.

The ongoing conflict has devastated Sudan’s population, with the United Nations estimating that nearly 25 million people require humanitarian assistance. Many Sudanese have lost their sources of income and struggle with the soaring cost of living.
