Sudan condemns Iran’s attack on Qatar as Middle East tensions flare

June 23, 2025 (PORT SUDAN) – Sudan on Monday condemned a missile attack on Qatar, weighing in on a dramatic escalation between Iran and the United States that has stoked fears of a wider regional war.

In a statement, Sudan’s foreign ministry described the attack on the “fraternal State of Qatar” as a violation of its sovereignty and a “clear contravention of international law.”

The ministry said the strike constituted “an escalation that threatens peace, security, and stability” and affirmed the necessity of halting military operations in the region.

The condemnation came after Iran’s military said it carried out a “devastating and powerful” missile attack on the Al Udeid airbase in Qatar, the largest U.S. military installation in the Middle East. Explosions were heard across the Qatari capital, Doha.

Despite Iran’s claim, U.S. officials said no American personnel were killed or injured in the attack. Qatar’s defence minister told Al Jazeera its air defences had intercepted missiles directed at the base.

The Iranian attack was a direct retaliation for U.S. airstrikes over the weekend that targeted Iranian underground nuclear facilities with 30,000-pound bunker-buster bombs, an action that saw the U.S. join Israel’s air campaign against Tehran. The strikes followed comments from U.S. President Donald Trump who mooted the possibility of the Iranian government being toppled.
