Sudan’s Darfur sees ‘unprecedented’ malnutrition in camp, group says

June 26, 2025 (NYALA) – An “unprecedented” outbreak of malnutrition is affecting children and women in the Kalma camp in Sudan’s South Darfur state due to a halt in humanitarian aid, a spokesperson for a displaced persons’ advocacy group said on Thursday.

Vast areas of the wider Darfur region, largely controlled by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), face severe food shortages that have led to famine in some parts. International organizations have accused both warring parties of restricting the delivery of aid to those affected by the conflict.

“Malnutrition is exacerbating the suffering of children in the Kalma camp in South Darfur, where they suffer from a lack of food and basic necessities,” Adam Rajal, the spokesperson for the Darfur Displaced Persons Coordination Committee, said in a press statement.

He added that children, along with pregnant and nursing mothers in the camp located east of the state capital, Nyala, are facing deteriorating humanitarian conditions.

Rajal called on humanitarian agencies and donors to increase financial support to address the situation in displacement camps in Darfur and other parts of Sudan.

For months, residents of the Kalma camp have reported a lack of food and life-saving medicines following the suspension of aid previously delivered by international organizations.
