Sudan’s RSF shells El Fasher, killing three, as child hunger deaths mount

June 29, 2025 (EL FASHER) – Artillery shelling by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) killed at least three people and wounded dozens in the besieged Sudanese city of El Fasher on Sunday, as a medical group reported that 239 children have died from malnutrition in the area over the last six months.

The RSF intensified its long-range artillery attacks on the capital of North Darfur, the army’s last stronghold in the Darfur region, ignoring United Nations calls for a humanitarian truce to allow aid to reach trapped civilians.

Local sources said shells struck the Nivasha market in the Abu Shouk camp north of the city, killing at least three people.

The market, which has been operating at partial capacity, has been repeatedly hit, causing civilian casualties and widespread damage.

In a statement, the Sudan Doctors Network said it had recorded the deaths of 239 children from malnutrition and shortages of food and medicine in North Darfur state between January and June. The group blamed the crisis on the siege and the bombing of children’s nutrition warehouses.

“The world is ignoring the children of Darfur, who have been besieged for more than a year,” the statement said, calling for urgent international pressure on the RSF to accept the UN-proposed truce and allow an aid corridor.

The RSF has encircled El Fasher since April 2024. Deadly clashes between the RSF and the Sudanese army, along with its allied armed groups, have killed numerous civilians and destroyed homes and service facilities.
