Sudan asks U.S. for evidence on chemical weapons claim
July 10, 2025 (PORT SUDAN) – Sudan on Thursday asked the United States for the information it used to accuse the Sudanese army of using chemical weapons in its war against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Washington accused Sudan’s government of using chemical weapons in its war against the RSF on May 22 and imposed sanctions on Khartoum, including restrictions on exports and access to credit lines.
A spokesman for the Sudanese Foreign Ministry stated in a press release that Sudan’s delegation to the Executive Council of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in The Hague, on Wednesday, emphasised that “objective handling of any allegations requires access to the information on which they were based.”
He said the Sudanese government is currently working through technical channels with the U.S. side, which has expressed its willingness to provide Sudan with the necessary data and details in the coming period.
The statement said the OPCW’s Executive Council had discussed the U.S. allegations after some member states requested clarification.
Sudan’s delegation stressed during the meetings that the government’s position on the Chemical Weapons Convention is firm, as it rejects their use and adheres to its international obligations, according to the statement.
The statement said the delegation affirmed Sudan’s serious and transparent handling of Washington’s allegations, as it had initiated measures to address them, including the formation of a national committee to investigate the claims as soon as the required technical information is received.
He noted that Sudan’s delegation had called on the Executive Council to allow the investigation to complete its work in a spirit of constructive cooperation.
The head of the Sovereign Council and commander-in-chief of the army formed a committee on May 29 to investigate the use of chemical weapons, which includes the ministries of foreign affairs and defence and the General Intelligence Service.
The government and armed forces have denied using chemical weapons in the conflict that has been ongoing since April 15, 2023.
The foreign ministry spokesman stated that Sudan is prepared to cooperate with the OPCW and member states to support efforts aimed at preventing the spread and use of these weapons, thereby enhancing regional and international peace and security.
