Sudanese army airstrike kills at least 8 in displacement shelters, local group says

July 11, 2025 (ABU ZABAD) – An airstrike by the Sudanese army killed at least eight people and wounded others on Thursday at two schools being used as shelters for displaced people in the city of Abu Zabad in West Kordofan state, a local emergency response group said.

In a statement, the Abu Zabad emergency room said the strike targeted the Osama bin Zaid and Al-Wifaq schools, killing civilians, including children and the elderly.

The group accused the army of a premeditated attack, calling it a “war crime” and a “blatant defiance of all laws and customs.” It called on the warring parties to avoid civilian gathering areas.

The Sudanese army’s air force has recently intensified its aerial bombing campaign in the Kordofan region, according to local reports.

The emergency group’s statement noted that a similar airstrike hit a girls’ secondary school used as a shelter in Abu Zabad on June 10. It also said the city’s main market had been struck at least three times over the past three weeks, resulting in civilian deaths and injuries.
