July 20, 2025 (KHARTOUM) A Sudanese government committee on Saturday set deadlines of July and August to restore electricity to Khartoum’s hospitals and water stations as part of an urgent plan to facilitate the return of displaced residents, the Khartoum State Media reported.

Sudan’s central bank pledged to provide foreign currency for the energy and water sectors, while the committee committed to repairing 60 schools, providing 40,000 desks and clearing rubble from the capital, the statement said.

The decisions were made at a meeting chaired by Sovereign Council member Ibrahim Jabir and attended by Prime Minister Kamil Idris and several ministers. Jabir said restoring water, power, health, and education were “urgent priorities.”

The meeting also called for the immediate start of reconstruction for the city’s factories and banks.

Only 105,000 people have returned to Khartoum since the army retook the city from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). An estimated 3.6 million residents fled the capital after war broke out in April 2023.

The committee, formed by military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, is also tasked with overseeing a planned military withdrawal from Khartoum, clearing informal housing settlements and managing the city’s foreign population.
