Sudan parallel authority names former official as prime minister
July 26, 2025 (NYALA) – An alliance of Sudanese armed groups on Saturday appointed Mohamed Hassan al-Taishi, a former civilian member of the country’s post-revolution Sovereign Council, as prime minister of a new parallel administration.
The appointment is part of a broader move by the Tasis (Founding) Alliance to establish a government in territories controlled by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N).
Two other prominent figures from the pre-war transitional government, Hadi Idris and al-Tahir Hajar, were also named to the new 15-member presidential council. Both men, like al-Ta’ishi, were part of the original Sovereign Council but were later dismissed from their posts after the conflict began.
In a video statement released on social media, alliance spokesman Alaa al-Din Naqd detailed a slate of appointments for regional governors, including for Darfur, Khartoum, the Nuba Mountains, and the Eastern region.
The presidential council itself is headed by RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan “Hemetti,” with SPLM-N leader Abdelaziz al-Hilu serving as his deputy.
The formation of the parallel government has been met with international opposition, with the United Nations, the United States, and the African Union warning that the move could lead to the country’s partition.
