Sudan appoints first woman as public prosecutor
September 1, 2025 (PORT SUDAN) – Sudan’s military leader, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, on Monday appointed Intisar Ahmed Abdel-Aal as public prosecutor, making her the first woman to hold the post, according to a statement from the ruling Sovereign Council.
The appointment followed local media reports last week that the previous public prosecutor, Al-Fatih Tayfour, had been dismissed, although his departure was not officially announced.
A veteran judicial figure, Abdel-Aal joined the Ministry of Justice in 1988 and has held several senior roles, including head of the public funds prosecution.
Following the 2019 overthrow of former President Omer al-Bashir, she chaired a committee investigating corruption and human rights violations. She was dismissed in May 2021 by the Empowerment Removal Committee but reinstated after a military coup later that year.
Her appointment is part of a broader shake-up of Sudan’s judiciary by al-Burhan, who, days earlier, appointed a new head of the Constitutional Court, filling a post that had been vacant for more than five years.
