Landslide wipes out entire village in Central Darfur’s Jebel Marra

September 1, 2025 (TERSIN) – The civilian authority of the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) led by Abdel Wahid al-Nur revealed on Monday that the entire population of a village in Jebel Marra, Central Darfur State, was killed by landslides caused by heavy rains.

The Jebel Marra areas, which are under the control of the SLM-AW, have suffered from poor infrastructure for many years, especially during the rainy season.

“All the residents of Tarsin village, estimated to be more than a thousand people, died yesterday, Sunday, and only one person survived, according to preliminary information,” the civilian authority said in a statement.

It indicated that the residents of the village, located in the centre of Jebel Marra, perished as a result of massive landslides caused by heavy rains that fell in the last week of August.

The Tarsin area, which was affected by the natural disaster, is one of the most renowned citrus-producing regions in Jebel Marra.

The statement called on the United Nations and regional and international organisations to assist the civilian authority in recovering the bodies from under the rubble.

The arrival of the United Nations and other organisations requires permission from the Sudanese government and passage permits from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which control most of the western region, including six out of the eight localities in Central Darfur State.
