U.N. envoy in East Africa to advance Sudan peace process

UN special envoy for Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra pose with Sumoud delegation in Nairobi on September 10, 2025

September 11, 2025 (NEW YORK) – The United Nations Personal Envoy for Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra, is in East Africa to intensify efforts to de-escalate the country’s conflict and advance a political solution, a U.N. spokesperson said on Thursday.

Lamamra has begun his tour in Nairobi, Kenya, where he is meeting with various Sudanese political stakeholders, U.N. spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said.

On Wednesday, the envoy met with delegations from the Founding Sudan Alliance (Tasis) and the Civil Democratic Alliance of the Revolution’s Forces (Sumoud). The discussions focused on a vision for ending the war that prioritizes protecting civilians, delivering humanitarian aid, and launching an inclusive political process.

“During his visit, the Personal Envoy will reiterate his calls on all relevant actors to engage in constructive dialogue leading to a sustainable peace,” Dujarric said, adding that Lamamra will also seek further progress on protecting civilians.

Following his engagements in Nairobi, Lamamra will travel to Port Sudan to meet with government authorities and other Sudanese stakeholders.

The envoy is also working with the African Union to convene a ministerial-level consultative meeting in Addis Ababa to help unify mediation efforts, Dujarric said.

The conflict has left 25 million people, nearly half of Sudan’s population, facing acute hunger, according to the United Nations, which reiterated its call for an end to the fighting.
