Six killed in RSF shelling of crowded displacement shelter in El Fasher

September 30, 2025 (KHARTOUM) – At least six people were killed and dozens injured when Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) shelled a crowded displacement shelter in the North Darfur city of El Fasher on Tuesday, a local activist group and witnesses said.

A volunteer, Mohamed Yahya, told Sudan Tribune that three high-explosive shells hit the Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq School shelter as breakfast was being served to thousands of women, children, and the elderly.

The shelling destroyed the shelter’s kitchen and caused extensive damage to the living areas, he said.

The Coordination of El Fasher Resistance Committees confirmed the attack in a statement, saying at least six people were killed and 24 others were injured.

The targeted shelter is one of the largest in the city, housing thousands of people who had previously fled violence in other neighbourhoods and camps. They relied on the now-destroyed kitchen for food.

The attack is the latest in a continuous RSF campaign against El Fasher since April 2024, which has involved drones and heavy artillery and has destroyed markets, hospitals, and water sources.

Humanitarian conditions in the city continue to deteriorate as the RSF prevents the flow of relief, commercial goods, and medicine to besieged civilians, aid groups say.

The attack came a day after the Sudanese army said it had successfully conducted its first aid airdrop over the city since a military aircraft was shot down on April 3.
