Al-Burhan, Egyptian foreign minister discuss efforts to end Sudan’s conflict

October 1, 2025 (PORT SUDAN) – Sudan’s military leader, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, on Wednesday discussed Egyptian-led efforts to secure a humanitarian truce and end the country’s long-running conflict.

The talks, held in the Red Sea city of Port Sudan, were also attended by Sudanese Foreign Minister Mohieldin Salem and the ambassadors from both nations.

Abdelatty told reporters that Egypt is pushing within all diplomatic frameworks, including the international Quad, to broker a humanitarian truce. The goal, he said, is to achieve an immediate ceasefire and launch a Sudanese-led political process.

The Quad, which includes the United States, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the UAE, has proposed a roadmap beginning with a three-month truce, followed by a permanent ceasefire and a political process to restore civilian rule.

Sudan’s government, however, maintains its own plan, presented to the United Nations in March. It calls for a ceasefire only after the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) gather in designated areas in Darfur, which would then allow for the return of displaced people and the delivery of aid before any political talks begin.

Abdelatty reiterated Cairo’s support for Sudan’s national institutions, particularly the military, and pledged assistance for post-war reconstruction. He added that Cairo expects al-Burhan to visit at the end of the month for the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum.

Sudan’s foreign minister, Mohieldin Salem, said the visit was part of ongoing consultations to strengthen bilateral ties.

“Khartoum and Cairo will proceed to address all the problems created by the war,” Salem said, claiming it was “imposed on the Sudanese people with the support of external circles.”
