South Sudan pushes Sudan peace efforts as foreign minister visits

October 4, 2025 (PORT SUDAN) – South Sudan’s Foreign Minister, Monday Simaya Kumba, arrived in the eastern city of Port Sudan on Saturday for an official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and advancing peace efforts in Sudan.

He was received at Port Sudan airport by his Sudanese counterpart, Mohieldin Salem, along with ministry officials and the chargé d’affaires of Juba’s embassy.

According to Sudan’s state news agency SUNA, Kumba will hold talks with Salem on bilateral ties and shared challenges. His two-day visit also includes meetings with other senior Sudanese officials.

The trip is Kumba’s first to Sudan since his appointment in April and comes as Juba actively mediates to find a peaceful settlement to its neighbour’s ongoing conflict. On Friday, Kumba said his country was engaged in diplomatic efforts with regional and international partners to secure a ceasefire.

The visit builds on relations between the two countries that have improved significantly since the 2019 ouster of former Sudanese president Omer al-Bashir. Juba has since become a key mediator in Sudanese conflicts, brokering the 2020 Juba Peace Agreement between the government and a coalition of armed groups.
