October 16, 2025 (PORT SUDAN) – Sudan’s annual inflation rate rose slightly to 83.47% in September from 83.05% in August, the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) said on Thursday, as the war-torn nation’s economy continues to struggle.

The rate has fallen significantly from a peak of 422% in July 2021 but remains high amid a continuous slide in the value of the local currency and a devastating internal conflict that has crippled the economy.

Inflation in urban areas accelerated to 87.64% from 83.93% in August, while the rate in rural areas eased slightly to 81.91%, the agency’s data showed.

The education sector saw the sharpest price surge, with its inflation rate jumping by nearly 47 percentage points to 234.65%, a move the CBS attributed to more schools reopening in government-controlled territories. Prices for housing, health, and transportation also climbed.

In contrast, inflation for the food and beverages basket, which accounts for more than half of Sudanese household spending, decreased.

The persistent price pressures add to the hardship of many Sudanese who have lost their livelihoods since the conflict erupted, leaving them to face soaring prices with dwindling incomes and scarce job opportunities.
