Sudan inflation continues to decline, drops to 77.40% in October

November 19, 2025 (PORT SUDAN) – Sudan’s Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) said on Wednesday that the inflation rate continued its decline, reaching 77.40% in October compared to 83.47% in September.

The annual inflation rate is measured by the change in the general price level for the current month compared to the same month last year, reflecting price changes over a full year.

The CBS, in a statement, said that “the rate of change in the general price level—inflation—in October 2025 rose by 77.40% over its counterpart in the previous year.”

It indicated that the inflation rate in urban areas in October reached 83.37%, down from 87.64% in the preceding month. Meanwhile, the inflation rate in rural areas in October reached 74.76%, down from 81.91% in September.

The Bureau explained that inflation rates were based on price data collected field-by-field from 16 states. Due to the deteriorating security situation in North Darfur, data from that state could not be obtained, and its prices were estimated. It also noted that it continues to estimate commodity price data for Central Darfur state as data collection has been halted since the outbreak of the war.

The Central Bureau of Statistics relies on 663 commodities to measure inflation, reflecting society’s consumption patterns across economic, social, and geographical categories in rural and urban areas, distributed into 12 groups. The most significant portion of the Sudanese population’s income is spent on the Food, Beverages group (52.89%), followed by the Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas, Fuel group (14.17%), and the Transport group (8.34%).

CBS reported a decline in the inflation rate in 10 groups during October. The highest decrease was in the Communications group at 16.93%, followed by a 13.39% decrease in the Health group.

However, the inflation rate for the Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas, Fuel group in October rose to 72.80%, an increase of 1.55% from the previous month. Similarly, inflation for the Restaurants, Hotels group rose by 0.69%, reaching 47.69%.

The report mentioned that the inflation rate in October increased in 8 states, with the highest rate recorded in Northern State at 13.38% and the lowest increase at 0.65% in South Kordofan. The rate remained stable in four states but decreased in six. The largest decrease was recorded in River Nile State at 70.36%, followed by Al-Gezira State (30.64%), White Nile State (20.75%), Kassala State (1.43%), North Kordofan State (1.22%), and a 0.58% drop in Red Sea State.

Inflation began its gradual descent after peaking at 422% in July 2021. Despite this current decline, many Sudanese citizens—who have lost their livelihoods due to the ongoing conflict—complain about the unmanageable rise in commodity prices, compounded by the local currency’s continued depreciation, and lack of jobs.
