November 24, 2025 (NEW YORK) – The United Nations Country Team convened in Khartoum on Monday for the first time since the war erupted in April 2023, marking a significant step toward re-establishing operations in the Sudanese capital.

Led by Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Denise Brown, the meeting signals a push to strengthen coordination on the ground, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said.

While the UN’s 28 agencies, funds, and programmes have maintained operations primarily from Port Sudan on the Red Sea coast, Dujarric described the gathering in Khartoum as a “gradual move back” to the capital.

“This marks an important step, signalling strengthened UN coordination and engagement on the ground,” Dujarric told reporters.

He cautioned that the humanitarian situation remains dire, with fresh displacement reported from El Fasher and the Kordofan region.

In Tawila and Dabbah, UN teams are conducting protection monitoring to identify urgent needs, including support for survivors of sexual violence and separated children. Priorities include psychosocial support, family reunification and the replacement of lost identity documents.

Across the border in Chad, Dujarric said reception sites for refugees are facing critical shortages of shelter and latrines, despite ongoing infrastructure work.

The UN reiterated its call for an immediate end to hostilities to allow civilians access to protection and aid.
