Sudan backs Saudi call for Yemen southern dialogue

January 3, 2026 (PORT SUDAN) – Sudan on Saturday declared its support for Saudi Arabia’s efforts regarding political developments in Yemen, including Riyadh’s call to host a conference for southern factions.

Saudi Arabia called for the conference in Riyadh to find a solution to the southern issue and urged the internationally recognized Yemeni government to engage in dialogue.

The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that the government supports the “wise efforts and positions” of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia regarding the political developments in the Republic of Yemen.

The ministry noted that this support includes Saudi Arabia’s response to a request from the Chairman of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad Muhammad al-Alimi, to hold a comprehensive dialogue in Riyadh for all southern components to reach peaceful solutions.

The statement added that this support comes within the context of Sudan’s membership in the Arab Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen.

A political crisis has emerged between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates following the advancement of the Abu Dhabi-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC). Tensions peaked after the UAE sent combat vehicles to the port of Al Mukalla, which were bombed by coalition forces after being unloaded from two ships.

Following that incident, Saudi Arabia supported the Yemeni government’s demand for the withdrawal of Emirati forces from the country within 24 hours, shortly before the STC declared secession.

Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs called for the need to respect Yemen’s security and stability. It urged all Yemeni parties to negotiate a peaceful solution that would achieve stability and protect the country from the risks of foreign interference.
