January 4, 2026 (ASMARA) – Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki held talks with Sudanese Finance Minister Gibril Ibrahim and Information Minister Khalid Aleisir on Sunday to discuss coordination on Red Sea stability and regional security.

The meeting, held in the rural Adi Halo region, focused on the importance of continued political coordination to serve the interests of both nations and bolster stability in the Horn of Africa, the state-run Sudan News Agency (SUNA) reported.

The discussions covered bilateral relations and ways to enhance cooperation across various sectors, alongside consultations on regional and international developments.

Afwerki has been seeking to strengthen ties with Red Sea coastal states, including recent visits to Saudi Arabia and Egypt, as neighbouring Ethiopia continues to seek maritime access.

The Eritrean leader said his country is committed to its historical ties with Sudan and supports efforts to achieve security and stability, emphasizing the need for cooperation to face shared challenges.

The Sudanese delegation praised Eritrea for the facilities provided to Sudanese citizens residing in or transiting through the country during the current war. They commended Afwerki’s political stance in support of Sudan’s unity and security.

Sudanese nationals have been granted privileges, including fee exemptions and freedom of movement, in Eritrea since the conflict began in April 2023.
