Sisi tells U.S. envoy Sudan security is ‘existential’ for Egypt

January 14, 2026 (CAIRO) – Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi received Massad Boulos, the senior advisor to the U.S. President for Arab and African Affairs, on Wednesday to discuss efforts to end the conflict in Sudan and bolster regional stability.
The meeting was attended by Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and the Director of General Intelligence, Major General Hassan Rashad.
Egyptian presidency spokesperson Mohamed el-Shenawy stated that President Sisi reaffirmed Cairo’s steadfast position supporting Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.
The president emphasized a categorical rejection of any attempts to undermine Sudanese security. He noted that Egypt would not allow such threats due to the “organic link” between the national security of the two neighbouring nations.
Regarding the gravity of the situation, the spokesperson highlighted Sisi’s warning that Egypt “will not allow any attempts to undermine Sudan’s security and stability, given the organic link between the national security of the two brotherly countries.”
Sisi also expressed his appreciation for U.S. President Donald Trump’s commitment to ending the war. He confirmed Egypt’s support for all regional and international initiatives aimed at restoring peace.
The visit to Cairo marks the final stop on Boulos’s regional tour, which covered key capitals involved in the international mechanism for Sudan.
According to recent reports, Boulos held high-level discussions in Riyadh on January 6 with Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman and Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan.
Those talks focused on coordinating efforts for an immediate humanitarian truce. The parties also discussed leveraging the Saudi-American partnership to drive a political solution.
Following his stop in Riyadh, the U.S. advisor travelled to Abu Dhabi on January 8, where he was received by UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
The two sides discussed the urgency of de-escalation to alleviate civilian suffering. During that visit, Boulos announced Washington’s plans to organize an international donor conference for Sudan in the coming weeks.
The conference aims to establish a dedicated fund for what President Trump has described as the world’s largest humanitarian crisis.
In the Cairo meeting, discussions also touched on the need for increased consultation between Egypt and the United States on other regional files, including Libya and the Horn of Africa.
President Sisi underscored that Egyptian water security remains an “existential issue” and a top priority, directly linked to the country’s national security.
For his part, Boulos praised Egypt’s pivotal role in promoting regional peace and security. He commended the ongoing cooperation aimed at reducing tensions across the Middle East and Africa.
