January 17, 2026 (KHARTOUM) – The Chairman of the Transitional Sovereign Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Army, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, issued a decree on Saturday to reconstitute the Supreme Council for Strategic Cooperation and Coordination between Sudan and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

In March 2025, Saudi Arabia and Sudan agreed to establish a coordination council to enhance bilateral relations across various fields, following discussions between al-Burhan and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Mecca.

The Sovereign Council stated in a press release that “al-Burhan issued a decree providing for the reconstitution of the Supreme Council for Strategic Cooperation and Coordination between the Republic of Sudan and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”

The statement indicated that the decision is based on what was agreed upon during the meeting between the Chairman of the Sovereign Council and Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister, as part of the two countries’ efforts to strengthen bilateral relations and elevate them to a strategic level that covers all sectors.

Relations between Sudan and Saudi Arabia have deepened significantly in recent periods. Saudi Arabia is an active member of the “Quartet” mechanism, which also includes Egypt, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates, aimed at ending the ongoing military conflict in Sudan.

Last November, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman requested U.S. President Donald Trump to intervene personally to end the war in Sudan.

In a related development, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Minerals, Hind Siddiq Hamed, stated in a press briefing on the sidelines of the Future Minerals Forum, which concluded yesterday in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, that Sudan has become a focal point for major international companies.

She noted that the ministry has received advanced investment offers from companies specializing in modern mining technologies, which she described as a clear indication of growing international confidence in Sudan’s mining potential.
