March 1, 2026 (NYALA) – A massive fire on Sunday destroyed more than 1,000 homes at the Kalma displacement camp in Nyala, South Darfur, according to the Coordination for Displaced Persons and Refugees.

Kalma is one of Darfur’s largest camps, sheltering tens of thousands of families displaced by armed conflict. The blaze is the latest in a series of recurring fires across Darfur’s camps, often fueled by flammable building materials, high temperatures, and severe overcrowding.

Adam Rejal, spokesperson for the General Coordination for Displaced Persons and Refugees in Darfur, said the fire broke out in the morning at Kalma Camp’s Centre 1. He noted the destruction has left thousands of families, already living in dire humanitarian conditions, without shelter.

Rejal said the fire originated in a single home and spread rapidly through the camp’s narrow corridors and densely packed structures. The flames caused significant loss of personal property and stored food supplies.

A displaced woman with special needs was critically injured and is being treated at Nyala Hospital, Regal added.

The spokesperson appealed to the international community and humanitarian agencies for immediate aid, including emergency shelter, food, and water. He also called for support to rebuild camp infrastructure and improve disaster response to prevent future tragedies.
