Sudan’s Northern State reports five new dengue fever cases

March 2, 2026 (DONGOLA) – Sudan’s Northern State health ministry reported five new cases of dengue fever on Monday, bringing the total number of infections to 116 as of March 1.

No deaths have been recorded, though health officials expressed concern that the disease could spread across the state if preventative interventions are not tightened.

Northern State has seen a rise in mosquito-borne illnesses over the past few weeks, particularly in the agricultural and irrigation areas of Merowe locality. Health authorities have responded by intensifying control campaigns, public awareness programs, and epidemiological surveillance to curb the outbreak.

The state’s Emergency Operations Centre, led by Acting Director General of the Ministry of Health Satti Hassan Satti, said in a statement that the five new cases were identified in the areas of Al-Gureiba, Al-Aliab, and Al-Basa, with two additional cases in the Goz Garafi area of Merowe.

The statement noted that the Emergency Operations Centre’s daily meeting reviewed field interventions across the state’s localities. These measures include insect surveys, home inspections, health education seminars in public gathering places, and intensified efforts to combat disease vectors.

Officials emphasized the importance of community participation and adherence to health guidelines, specifically the elimination of breeding sites for the Aedes aegypti mosquito. The current response effort is being conducted under the campaign slogan “By drying, the fever stops.”
