Five killed as fire guts displacement camp in Sudan’s Darfur
April 15, 2026 (ZALINGI) — At least five people, including two children, were killed on Wednesday when a massive fire tore through a displacement camp in Sudan’s Darfur region, local sources said.
The blaze broke out at a temporary shelter in the town of Rokoro, located in the North Jebel Marra locality of Central Darfur state. The camp houses thousands of people who fled fighting in North Darfur’s capital, El Fasher, after it was seized by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in October 2025.
Local sources told Sudan Tribune that the fire spread rapidly through the overcrowded camp, destroying dozens of shelters built from highly flammable local materials. The incident has left more than 1,400 displaced people without shelter.
This is the latest in a series of devastating fires to hit displacement camps across Darfur in recent months. The recurring disasters are fueled by extreme overcrowding, a lack of safety measures, and the use of primitive building materials.
The humanitarian crisis in Darfur continues to worsen as hundreds of thousands of displaced people live in dire conditions with limited international aid and escalating violence.
