Sudan doctors warn of humanitarian disaster in Ed Damazin

April 29, 2026 (ED DAMAZIN) – The Sudan Doctors Network warned on Wednesday of an imminent humanitarian catastrophe threatening more than 100,000 displaced people in the Blue Nile region.

Fighting in the southern and western parts of the region between the Sudanese army and an alliance comprising the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement has triggered mass displacement. Residents from the Kurmuk and Geissan districts have fled toward the regional capital, Ed Damazin.

The Sudan Doctors Network said in a statement that the approaching autumn rainy season poses a severe risk of epidemic outbreaks. It cited a lack of health infrastructure and the absence of urgent interventions to improve living and health conditions.

The network expressed grave concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation for those currently sheltered in Ed Damazin.

According to the statement, Ed Damazin hosts approximately 10 displacement centres housing over 100,000 people. Children make up 40 per cent of the displaced population, while women and the elderly account for the remaining 60 per cent.

The group reported that the displaced face tragic conditions, including the spread of diseases and acute shortages of food and water. Health services in the shelters have declined significantly.

The network appealed to international organizations and humanitarian agencies to intervene immediately. It called for the provision of food, medicine, and clean water, as well as the protection of civilians, particularly the most vulnerable, from the fallout of the worsening crisis.
