Sudanese journalists syndicate warns over health of detained reporters

May 15, 2026 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese Journalists Syndicate said on Friday it had received confirmed reports that detained journalist Moamer Ibrahim is facing a severe health deterioration in a Rapid Support Forces (RSF) detention centre.

The syndicate said in a statement that Ibrahim is being completely denied medical care or examination, posing a direct threat to his life.

Ibrahim has been arbitrarily detained for eight months in the notorious Dagris prison in Nyala, South Darfur, under conditions that lack basic health and human dignity standards, the statement added.

The RSF arrested Ibrahim on October 26 after seizing El Fasher in North Darfur as he attempted to leave the city. He was later transferred to Nyala and accused of defaming the paramilitary group by calling them an armed militia, as well as being biased toward the army.

The journalists syndicate also expressed grave concern over the deteriorating health of journalist Issam Mohamed Haroun, whose place of detention remains unknown.

The syndicate demanded that the RSF immediately and unconditionally release both Ibrahim and Haroun, holding the paramilitary group fully responsible for their lives and safety. It also called for the immediate disclosure of their locations and urgent access to emergency medical care.

Additionally, the syndicate raised alarms over the health of photojournalist Abdelaziz Mahmoud Saleh Arja, who has been detained by security authorities in the eastern city of Port Sudan since April 29 last year.

Several other journalists have been missing since the RSF took control of El Fasher, the historic capital of Darfur.
