Sudan’s prime minister meets Erdogan in Ankara as Turkey pledges support for reconstruction
May 20, Ankara — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan received Sudanese Prime Minister Kamil Idris at the presidential complex in Ankara on Wednesday, as the two countries held high-level bilateral talks covering reconstruction, investment, and the strengthening of their strategic partnership.
Idris arrived in Turkey at the head of a senior delegation that included the ministers of finance, agriculture, energy and minerals, alongside members of the prime minister’s office.
Erdogan expressed Ankara’s support for Sudan’s stability and sovereignty, and welcomed the resumption of the Joint Economic Committee between the two countries, according to a statement from Sudan’s Council of Ministers. The Turkish president also announced his country’s readiness to share expertise in clean energy, infrastructure, agriculture, and joint project development.
Idris described Turkey as a strategic partner for Khartoum and called on both Turkish and Sudanese private sector actors to forge direct partnerships in investment and reconstruction projects inside Sudan.
The meeting was attended by senior Turkish officials including Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar, and Agriculture Minister Ibrahim Yumakli.
Idris later held a separate bilateral meeting with Vice President Yilmaz, attended by the agriculture ministers of both countries, focusing on economic and investment cooperation and Sudan’s reconstruction efforts.
According to the Sudanese Council of Ministers, the talks covered cooperation opportunities in agriculture, energy, mining, infrastructure, ports, transport, and logistics. Discussions also addressed several major strategic projects, including the “Zadi 1” project, agricultural schemes in Gezira, Rahad, and Hawad, as well as cooperation in oil, mining, electricity, renewable energy, and gum arabic.
The two sides also discussed a “One Million Productive Youth Housing” project and cooperation in training, capacity building, digital transformation, and e-government, drawing on Turkey’s experience in public administration and infrastructure management.
Sudan and Turkey agreed to activate joint follow-up mechanisms, prepare an implementation roadmap for priority projects, and hold a Sudan-Turkey Business Forum in the coming period. The Joint Economic Committee is expected to conclude its work on Thursday with the signing of memoranda of understanding and agreements covering trade, investment, transport, agriculture, and reconstruction.
Yilmaz said in a post on Turkey’s N Social platform that Ankara was “determined to elevate our relations with Sudan to more advanced levels across political, economic, commercial, and cultural fields,” adding that Turkey would continue to support all international efforts aimed at ending conflicts in the region and achieving a lasting ceasefire and inclusive political process.
