RSF renews deadly attacks on villages in North Kordofan’s Bara
May 29, Bara — Elements of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Friday launched fresh assaults on several villages west of Bara in North Kordofan State, following a devastating raid the previous day that left dozens of civilians dead.
The General Union of the Dar Hamid Tribe announced on Thursday that a convoy of approximately 20 heavily armed combat vehicles attacked the villages of Al-Murrah, Umm Sadoun Al-Sharif, and Al-Radah, located in the Western Bara locality. According to tribal leadership, the initial incursion resulted in the immediate deaths of more than 30 civilians.
Local sources told Sudan Tribune on Friday that RSF units renewed their assault on Al-Murrah town amid a complete communications blackout. Paramilitary forces reportedly confiscated Starlink satellite internet devices used by residents, severely limiting the flow of information and hampering coordination from the area.
Grieving residents buried their victims late Thursday night under conditions of extreme tension. The funerals coincided with an escalation in “Al-Faza’a”—a traditional mobilization system declared by the youth of the Dar Hamid tribe to organize armed civil defense and protect their villages from ongoing RSF incursions.
In a statement issued Friday, the Sudanese Doctors Network condemned what it described as a “massacre” perpetrated by the RSF in Al-Murrah and surrounding villages. The medical group confirmed that at least 27 civilians were killed in the latest wave of violence, strongly denouncing the deliberate targeting of unarmed populations in their homes.
Meanwhile, the state government of North Kordofan issued a press statement strongly condemning the “heinous crimes and violations committed by the rebel Rapid Support Forces militia against defenseless citizens in the Al-Murrah area”.
State authorities noted that preliminary statistics indicate a high number of dead and wounded among innocent civilians. The government added that these assaults constitute a full-fledged crime against humanity, exposing the scale of systemic violations the RSF continues to commit against civilians and their private property.
Bara, the second-largest city in North Kordofan State, has repeatedly changed hands between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF since the outbreak of hostilities. The strategic town is currently under the control of the RSF.
While the paramilitary group operates across several localities and towns within the broader Kordofan region, the Sudanese army and its allied forces maintain firm control over El Obeid, the state capital of North Kordofan.
