Sudanese army air defences intercept RSF drones over Khartoum
June 9, 2026 (KHARTOUM) – Sudanese army anti-aircraft guns engaged strategic drones flying over Khartoum state on Tuesday, with explosions heard across Omdurman and Khartoum North.
Following previous drone attacks on Khartoum state targeting the airport and electricity facilities, the army deployed air defence systems that have since protected the capital.
Witnesses told Sudan Tribune they heard explosions in northern Khartoum North and northwestern Omdurman, where the army’s military headquarters are located.
They also saw air defence missiles intercepting strategic drones flying over Omdurman and the East Nile area, east of the Sudanese capital.
Military sources said a Rapid Support Forces (RSF) drone attempted to bomb military sites northwest of Omdurman before ground defences intercepted it and prevented it from reaching its targets.
The same sources said air defences also engaged strategic drones in East Nile, with no casualties reported.
The Sudanese army has not issued any official comment regarding the drones that attempted to target several sites in Khartoum state, and the RSF has not claimed responsibility for the attempted attacks.
Army intensifies drone strikes in Kurmuk
The army carried out drone airstrikes for the second time this week in Kurmuk, in the southern Blue Nile region, targeting the defences of an alliance between the RSF and the SPLM-N.
An army source said the attack destroyed combat vehicles belonging to the rebels, who have controlled Kurmuk since last March.
A new battlefront has been active since February in the Blue Nile region in far southeastern Sudan.
Sudanese army forces are trying to regain control of Kurmuk, a strategic town on the border with Ethiopia, with battles raging on its southern, western, and northern outskirts.
The fighting in these areas has displaced tens of thousands of people to camps in Ed Damazin, the capital of the Blue Nile region.
